Pierre-Louis Sixdenier, Mark Deutel, Stefan Wildermann and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Teich received the Best Paper Award at this year’s ECML PKDD 2026 (European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases). The award was given for their paper “Early-Exit Neural Architecture Search for Energy-Harvesting Edge Computing”. The award was presented during the event (7–11 September 2026) in Naples (Italy).
In this paper, the authors present a two-stage method for selecting the output of an early-exit deep neural network (EE-DNN). The method is executed periodically on an energy-harvesting microcontroller.
