05.10.2015: Kickoff event of ESI Module 2 and the 9th Embedded Talk at the Technical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg
The official launch of “Module 2” of the ESI Application centre took place on October 5th 2015 as an official ceremony followed by the 9th Embedded Talk at the Technical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).
The official welcome was hold by the two heads of the ESI application centre, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Teich (FAU) and Thomas von der Grün (Fraunhofer Institute) who gave a short introduction on the ESI Application Centre. “The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs supports the ESI application centre with further 6.3 million Euros until the end of the year 2018. The Bavarian economic is provided with the latest research results in embedded electronic system by the ESI application centre. This is how we concentrate bring digitalization to producing companies”, Dr. Ronald Mertz, head of the department for Innovation, Research and Technology of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, praises the work of the 16 involved chairs of the FAU and the Fraunhofer Institute in his opening speech.
Further welcoming speeches were given by FAU Vice president Prof. Dr. Günter Leugering; the 3rd mayor of Nuremberg, Dr. Klemens Gsell; Prof. Dr. Albert Heuberger, head of Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Circuits (IIS). Finally Prof. Dr. Peter Liggesmeyer, President of the Association of Computer Science and head of Fraunhofer IESE in Kaiserslautern, held a keynote on the topic of “The Future of Embededded Software Development.”
The afternoon was addressed to the topic of “Embedded Sensor for automobile, fitness and industrial applications” and offered as ‘Embedded Talk’ an informative and practical lecture program. The CEO of the Interdisciplinary Centre of Embedded Sytems, Dr.-Ing. Torsten Klie, presented what ESI Application Centre offers. The word was then passed to the ESI lab leaders, for Automotive@ESI: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Glaß (FAU), Dr.-Ing. Joachim Keinert and Klaus Taschka (both Fraunhofer IIS), for the Lab Automation@ESI: PD Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kölpin (FAU) and Dr.-Ing. Mario Schühler (Fraunhofer IIS) and finally for the Lab Fitness@ESI: Dr.-Ing. Christopher Mutschler and Prof. Dr. Björn Eskofier (both FAU). The lab leaders gave an overview on their work and initial research results. Industrial experts in the field of sensor related development for industrial automation, automobile applications and the use of embedded sensors for sport and fitness applications served with lectures as counterparts for the particularly labs. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Schürzinger (Balluff GmbH), for example, gave a talk on the topic of “Auto-ID Systems & OPA-UA – a Milestone on the Way to Industry 4.0.”
The charming moderator, Verena Rösel, led through the morning and also the panel discussion on “Common challenges regarding Safety, Energy Efficiency, Cost aspects and Miniaturization”, where all speakers of the Embedded Talk and Florian Netter (Audi AG) where involved.
The successful event ended with a get-together in the early evening.
